On July 4th, 1826, both U.S. presidents John Adams and Thomas Jefferson passed away—within five hours of each other. Crazy. They were once fellow patriots turned adversaries, and they were also the last surviving members of the original American revolutionaries.

Delaware: Strict trick-or-treating times enforced
To prevent “mischief of any sort,” children in the City of Rehoboth Beach may only go trick-or-treating between the hours of 6pm and 8pm on Halloween—UNLESS Halloween falls on a Sunday; in that case, “such going door to door and house to house for treats shall take place on the evening of October 30” instead.

Oscar Winners Used to Be Announced Before the Ceremony
During the early years of the Academy Awards, the organization provided newspapers with the names in advance, with the agreement that they would not publish the names until 11 p.m. Of course, then someone had to ruin it for everyone, when The Los Angeles Times broke this rule during the heated 1940 competition, announcing that Gone With the Wind had won before the statue had been handed out.
