History Fact

The Eastern Roman Empire’s weapon called Greek Fire was used in ship-mounted flamethrowers.

The secret of how to make Greek Fire was lost with the fall of the Roman Empire.

This weapon so unique and deadly due to the fact that throwing water onto it would only feed the fire. It was almost gelatinous in texture and would stick to things.

It was mostly used in naval warfare, as the large flamethrowers needed for its projectile use could be better accommodated by ships rather than infantry.

The Greek Fire would easily demolish a fleet of wood and canvas ships floating on water.

Food Thing

Pizza Margherita at Pizzeria Da Michele in Naples, Italy

One of the oldest pizzerias in Naples — and regularly voted one of the best — Pizzeria Da Michele has pizza-making down to an art. There are just two choices on the menu: margherita, with cheese, or marinara, without. You probably know which one we recommend.

(Pro tip: Take your pizza to go to avoid the hours-long wait.)

Movie/TV Trivia

Gone Girl

Production of the film had to be shut down for four days, due to Ben Affleck's refusal to follow David Fincher's vision, and wear a New York Yankees cap for a scene where Affleck's character, Nick, is at an airport. The Bostonian actor said to Fincher, "David, I love you, I would do anything for you. But I will not wear a Yankees hat." Eventually, the two settled for Ben's character to wear a Mets cap. Fincher jokingly describes Affleck's actions of this as "entirely unprofessional" in the DVD's audio commentary.
