This week has been a very busy reading week where I have read 8 books. Now, before I get ahead of myself they are mainly junior fiction and graphic novels but at the same time, I did end up reading a lot.
This week I read….
Atmosphere: A Love Story by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Just for the Summer by Abby Jimenez
The Story of Gumluck the Wizard by Adam Rex
The Story of Gumluck and the Dragon's Eggs by Adam Rex
The Lost Hero by Robert Venditti
The Son of Neptune by Robert Venditti
The Mark of Athena by Robert Venditti
The House of Hades by Robert Venditti
This is what I thought of each one.
Atmosphere: A Love Story by Taylor Jenkins Reid
I thought this was a well done queer romance that has been released in Pride month. We are following Joan, who is training to be an astronaut, based on her sister Barbara's suggestion. While training to be one, Joan meets Vanessa.Together over the next 4 years they develop a good relationship but Joan ends it due to being part of NASA in the early 1980's where there are no queer rights and those who are, are subject to blackmail so being part of NASA might not be the best thing for her (as she is told by her superior) if she stays in a relationship with Vanessa.Barbara has a daughter named Frances whom Joan has a pretty solid relationship. Frances is having a hard time adjusting to Barbara's search for the 'perfect ideal man' for her and not for them.
Just for the Summer by Abby Jimenez
I thought that this book was well done. I have not read any of the other books in the Part of Your World series, and you don't need to, to understand and to enjoy this book. I do want to read the other books in this series, though. The story alternates between Emma and Justin. Both have mother issues and are taking on new responsibilities in their personal lives. They get together knowing that it is just for the summer, but is it?Both end up doing the work that is needed and necessary to work on the trauma that was caused by their mothers, and are well on their way to recovery!
The Story of Gumluck the Wizard by Adam Rex
I thought it was cute, it is just about a wizard who helps out the townspeople but likes to keep to himself as well. He had a pet crow who helped him out, but Gumluck saves the town when the castle goes upside down!
The Story of Gumluck and the Dragon's Eggs by Adam Rex
I think that it is cute that Gumluck just wants to help, and he is helping the dragon by taking care of its egg so the dragon can forge before the eggs hatch. His pet crow even sits on the eggs to help nestle them!
The Lost Hero by Robert Venditti
II thought it was alright. It is in the Percy Jackson series or world, and it is just about 3 kids who are not friends needing to come together to find Percy. They discover things about themselves and each other and realize that they are not too bad of people. Worth the read, mainly because of the dragons.
The Son of Neptune by Robert Venditti
Percy Jackson is back, but he isn't who he once was, as his memory is still fuzzy. Together with the half-bloods that we met in the Lost Hero, they must band together to make them see why Percy is the son of Neptune!
The Mark of Athena by Robert Venditti
Annabell and Percy are back together!Athena comes to Annabell and tells her that she has to help her people. Annabell puts her brains to good use and relies a lot on Camp Half Blood to defeat their enemy. I enjoyed seeing Annabell kicking butt!
The House of Hades by Robert Venditti
The gang is back together to restore the balance of Hades. The Gods as well as the half bloods (of course) need to save the day before Hades takes over.We see how the Gods are really fighting for power and how they hate each other more than the half-bloods themselves.
I know that I said that I wasn’t to read for the sake of reading and just get a whole bunch of graphic novels, but I decided that I wanted to read some. It does help with my own personal statistics as well as my shorts. Yes, that shouldn’t be my only motivation to do it, but I am happy that I was able to read them!
Happy reading, everyone, and we will see you next week!
