Fun Fact

The global adult literacy rate is around 86 percent.

With each generation that passes, more and more people are learning how to read, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). These days, around 86 percent of adults around the world are able to enjoy a book. UNESCO also explained that their data shows "remarkable improvement among youth in terms of reading and writing skills and a steady reduction in gender gaps. Fifty years ago, almost one-quarter of youth lacked basic literacy skills compared to less than 10 percent in 2016."

History Fact

The Moscow Drought

When Russians got lost in the revelry after the defeat of Germany in World War II, Moscow literally ran out of vodka. Considering this is a country that later encouraged citizens to drink vodka to stave off cancer in the aftermath of Chernobyl, I’m shocked.

Weird Laws

Maryland

While there’s no specific law against taking a lion to the movies in Maryland (this does not, presumably, mean that one is allowed to take lions to movies), there is one against using any profanity while driving. Or, more specifically, while near any street, sidewalk or highway within the hearing of persons passing by, upon or along such street, sidewalk, or highway. So no profanity while driving.
