“The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.”

Reading Fact

The Japanese language has a word to denote letting reading materials pile up in one’s home and never read them – tsundoku.

The term originated in the Meiji era as Japanese slang and is a combination of two words – tsunde-oku (to pile things up ready for later) and dokusho (reading books).

There’s also an English word that can be used to describe loving the smell of old books – bibliosma, and one to express fear of running out of reading material – abibliophobia

History Fact

The Dutch-Scilly War lasted 335 years and had no battles or deaths.

n 1651 – 1986, the war was a by-product of the English Civil War and the decision of the Dutch to side with the Parliamentarians over the Royalists.

The Royalists had raided a few Dutch shipping vessels in revenge before fleeing to the Isles of Scilly.

The Dutch turned up, demanding reparations from the Royalists and, when they didn’t pay up, declared war.

But they decided to call it a day and go home pretty sharpish as they realized the Royalists didn’t have a penny to their names.

Only thing is they never declared peace with the Isles and just completely forgot they were at war.

Then, roughly 3 centuries later, historian Roy Duncan stumbled upon a footnote in Scilly about the war.

He invited the Dutch Ambassador for Great Britain to Scilly, where a peace treaty was negotiated and signed, bringing the war to an end after 335 years and no bitter bloodshed.
