Fun Fact

Some sea snakes can breathe through their skin.

You might think that it's just fish that have gills, but there are several species of sea snake that breathe through their skin as well. For example, the Hydrophis cyanocinctus has been found to breathe through the top of its own head. It has a small hole and collection of blood vessels at the top of its head for picking up oxygen from the seawater and sending it to the reptile's brain while it moves underwater.

Reading Fact

In ancient Egypt, all ships visiting Alexandria were obliged to surrender their books to the Royal Library and be copied. The original would be kept in the library and the copy given back to the owner.

The impressive collection of the Great Library of Alexandria did not appear out of thin air – all ships entering the city were instantly stripped of all their books, and while in theory the government was obliged to reimburse the original owners, it would only do so sometimes and rarely adequately.

History Fact

The guillotine was invented to create “equality in execution”.

The guillotine is an image that is fairly synonymous with France and the French Revolution.

Until it’s advent and widespread use, the regular methods of execution in France were rather savage. Punishment like being drawn and quartered were common.

The idea to use the guillotine as the main method of execution was part of the movement for equality in France that spurred on the revolution.

This created an equality in death and execution for citizens from all backgrounds.

Movie/TV Trivia

Buzz Lightyear’s original name was Lunar Larry

“To infinity, and beyond!”

Back in 1995, kids and parents the world over instantly fell in love with Buzz Lightyear, the cocky superhero who just refused to believe he was nothing more than a children’s toy. However, did you know that the character was never supposed to be called Buzz in the first place?!

The toy’s original name was ‘Lunar Larry’, which really just doesn’t have the same ring to it.

After a lot of back and forth between producers, Larry’s named was changed to Buzz Lightyear, as a nod to real-life astronaut Buzz Aldrin. Nice!

Also, in the original sketches for the movie, Buzz was supposed to be the good guy facing off against an evil pull-string cowboy called Woody. Eventually screenwriters decided to switch the pair around and as a result, one of the greatest Pixar movies of all time was born!

Our childhood just wouldn’t be the same without Buzz Lightyear flying around! We’re definitely glad they ditched the Lunar Larry name…
