Fun Fact
Pineapple works as a natural meat tenderizer.
The fruit is packed with the enzyme bromelain, which breaks down protein chains, making it an ideal marinade for meats when you don't have a lot of time. But for the same reason, pineapple does not work for jams or jellies, since the enzyme breaks down gelatin as well. The bromelain is so strong that pineapple processors have to wear protective gloves, otherwise over time the enzyme eats away at the skin on their face and hands, leaving dry skin and small sores.
Reading Fact
Librarians were once taught a special rounded style of handwriting to ensure uniformity and legibility in catalogs.
The handwriting style, called the “library hand,” was developed by Thomas Alva Edison in 1885. Based on Edison’s own handwriting, the style was especially perfected to allow librarians to “take legibly from the wire, longhand, forty-seven and even fifty-four words a minute”.
History Fact
Before Julius Caesar invaded Britain, many Romans didn’t believe it existed.
Julius Caesar was the first ever Roman to invade Britain. He did it twice in the years 55 and 54 BC.
Up until this point, there were many divided opinions on Britain within the Roman Empire.
Some believed Britain to be just the foot of another huge northern continent. Others thought it was a place full of unbelievable riches, whilst most thought it just didn’t exist.
Caesar’s first invasion of Britain was, in a militaristic sense, a resounding blunder.
Yet, due to the mythical nature of Britain, his invasion of the country was a huge PR success. It made him legendary in the eyes of many Romans.
Movie/TV Trivia
The androids in Alien are alphabetised
Have you ever noticed this fun fact about the Alien franchise? All of the monsters in the movie have been alphabetised, just to keep things nice and orderly amidst all of the terrifying extraterrestrial mayhem. Each instalment of the movie adds in another android and so far their names have appeared in alphabetical order.
The creatures are named as follows: Ash, Bishop, Call, and, most recently, David in Prometheus and Alien: Covenant.
Did you know that in the first Alien film, the creature is never filmed looking directly at the camera?
This is because Ridley Scott wanted to avoid showing the alien’s humanoid features and dispel any notions of a man wearing a rubber suit. Instead he insisted on shooting the beast at various close-up angles.
But if you watch the 1979 film back, viewers never see the monster in all of its entirety, and definitely not from the front.
