In 1933, the German Reichstag (Parliament) voted to give Hitler absolute control of the government. Only one person spoke against it—Social Democratic leader Otto Wels, who spoke the last free words in the Reichstag: “You can take our lives & our freedom, but you cannot take our honor. We are defenseless but not honorless.” The Enabling Act was passed anyway, allowing Hitler and his cabinet to enact laws without consulting parliament.
